I’ve never read any books by de Vigan and I expected to love this, based on the blurbs and the synopsis and the rave reviews on Goodreads. This slow burning thriller completely mesmerized me, and although it was surprisingly action-free, I still couldn't put it down (I still think it qualifies as a thriller because of the atmosphere). It’s a metafictional novel that’s a slow burn; voice-driven and atmospheric.

Secret Man is a demon of dreams. What develops is predictable and more and more implausible and I wasn’t convinced by either Delphine or L. It could be, of course, that perhaps L doesn’t actually exist but is a projection of Delphine’s troubled state of mind, (it is perhaps significant that L never actually meets any of Delphine's friends or family) but I wasn’t really convinced by this possibility either. Especially this kind of book or best seller modern, double that factor. I wrote a few thoughts in our reading group, and commenting there I realised that actually this book deserves the whole 5 stars. It’s a book that is totally about writers and writing, and it’s strange that the language is so uninspired.

Not only is the rhythm similar to Polanski's previous films, but it develops a disturbing relationship between a novelist and herself and the whole with her audience.
